HOT SPOTS FOR VIEWING:
- In 2013, Peter Greenburg, America’s foremost travel expert, listed the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge in his top five recommended spots for a bird watching spring break vacation. Its “Wildlife Drive” it is a paved one-way road that scoots between two tidal areas where tall wading birds come to feed. Winter visitors should come here early in the morning when Roseate Spoonbills and White Ibis, to name a couple, are fishing the most.
- Don’t neglect the interior wetlands, habitat of Red-shouldered Hawks and Pileated Woodpeckers. The Center Tract at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) has excellent trails for bird watchers. It’s best to come early morning or around sunset. While you’re there you can learn about their Snowy Plover Project.
- Lighthouse point is where migrating birds congregate in the trees. Come early in the morning for the incredible visual, and auditory, display.
During the winter months, SCCF collaborates with the Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society to offer birding tours on Foundation Preserves that are not normally open to the public. Visit their website for more information about this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Visitors are asked to help keep the shores of Captiva and Sanibel Islands bird-friendly by staying away from staked nest enclosures, adhering to the leash law, keeping the sands garbage-free, and filling in holes in the sand where chicks could get trapped. Also, hand-feeding of wild birds is prohibited—this includes the gulls, no matter how much they beg!
